Did you also know that those posters are available to you free of charge by mail from the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) or your local L&I office? Many marketing firms send targeted mailings to businesses offering to sell you the posters and threatening fines and penalties if you do not purchase them from that marketing firm. It is not a requirement of Washington State law to purchase posters from anywhere, and there is no fine or penalty for using the free posters. You can certainly purchase posters, but it is never required. There are three required (and free) posters that you must post to inform employees of their rights and responsibilities. You do not need to order new posters every year, but you must have the most current versions of the posters. Every employer in Washington state is required to create a written Accident Prevention Plan (APP) to address safety and health hazards found in their workplace. The plan should be unique to your specific type of business and the associated risks in your workplace. The APP for a construction company will look very different than the APP for a marketing firm. The first step in creating an APP is to identify hazards. There is an online Job Hazard Analysis guide provided by OSHA, which is a comprehensive online PDF that can help you understand and identify hazards unique to your business.
