Executive Director's Letter

The number one request for small businesses seeking help from SIMBA is financial support - whether that is filing state B&O and sales taxes, preparing for federal taxes (fyi: that daily Indaba coffee run is likely NOT a business deduction); and finding capital to grow and maintain your small business. The capital discussion usually starts with lending, but I would say 99% of for-profit businesses ask about grants. Sadly, 99% of small businesses are never going to receive a grant to grow their business, so you need to be ready to grow that business the "old-fashioned way": sales, business loans, and the investment of business partners, friends, and family.

Trust me, we wish we could give or find you a grant for your small business, but that is not the nature of grants. Grants are given by the government or private foundations. Grants almost always require your business to be a non-profit with 501(c)(3) status; sometimes, you can use an existing 501(c)(3) as a fiscal sponsor (SIMBA is now offering this service) to get around the requirement. There is the rare "for-profit" grant in areas of research, technology, and occasionally the arts. That is the exception and not the rule. That's why this month in our "Grant & Loan" opportunities section, we are highlighting two unique Washington State Department of Commerce-backed lending products that have revenue-based repayment - meaning you pay more when you make more and vice versa. I recommend you check those out, and you reach out to us to help get you loan ready if it's time to grow.  Waiting on a grant is like waiting for a new Rihanna album - it just doesn't feel like it's going to happen (Anti came out in 2016).

Warm regards, Robin

Business Tip

Did you know that every employer must post certain workplace posters in a conspicuous place, where employees can easily see them? Did you also know that those posters are available to you free of charge by mail from the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) or your local L&I office? Many marketing firms send targeted mailings to businesses offering to sell

you the posters and threatening fines and penalties if you do not purchase them from that marketing firm. It is not a requirement of Washington State law to purchase posters from anywhere, and there is no fine or penalty for using the free posters. You can certainly purchase posters, but it is never required.

There are three required (and free) posters that you must post to inform employees of their rights and responsibilities. You do not need to order new posters every year, but you must have the most current versions of the posters.

The three posters are:

Notice to Employees - If a Job Injury Occurs;

Job Safety and Health Law; AND

Your Rights as a Worker.

Note that the “Notice to Employees - If a Job Injury Occurs” poster has two versions, one for employers offering state-funded workers' compensation coverage and one for employers offering self-insured workers' compensation coverage.

Want more information? SIMBA always has the posters on hand, and you can also reach out to L&I’s Small Business Office by email: smallbusiness@lni.wa.gov or phone: 1-800-987-0145.
